Wayne G. Schmidt

Wayne G. Schmidt, age 88, of Winona, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2024, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on February 20, 1936, in Winona County, to George and Irene (Belter) Schmidt. Wayne graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1953 and married Joan Todd on June 2, 1962, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Wilson.

Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Europe, enjoying his time there and his ability to travel throughout the continent. After his father's passing in 1963, he took over the family business and later opened Schmidt Sales and Service, which he operated until his retirement.

Known for his passion for playing dominoes and creating inventions, Wayne also had an interest in local history, often sharing genealogy and family connections with others. However, nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family. His children held a special place in his heart, and his grandchildren were the light of life. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Wayne is lovingly survived by his wife, Joan; children: Todd (Cindy) Schmidt, Troy Schmidt, and Mitch (John Schlobohm) Schmidt; grandchildren: Ashely (Eric) Christie, Broc (Jenna) Schmidt, and Paige (Thomas) O’Brien; great-grandchildren: Marlie and Maddix Christie, and Declan O’Brien; siblings: Dean (Marly) Schmidt and Loretta Mueller; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters: Evonne Schmidt and Karen Young.

A private family funeral service was held to honor Wayne’s wishes. He was laid to rest at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Cemetery in Wilson.
