Robert C. Shattuck

Robert Curtis Shattuck, age 67, of Winona, passed away after a short illness on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the Gundersen Health System Hospital in La Crosse, WI, with his wife and daughter by his side.

He was born on September 12, 1957, in Rochester, MN, to Curt and Allene (Nichols) Shattuck. Bob attended St. Charles High School and left home at 17 to attend Winona Senior High School during the day, and to work at Winona Tool at night. He also graduated from the Winona Vo-Tech auto mechanics program. Bob met Peggy Beranek in 1979, and they were united in marriage on September 21, 1985, at St. John Nepomucene Church in Winona. In all, they enjoyed 44 years of love and laughter together. Bob had a wonderful, quick-witted sense of humor and Peggy credited their long relationship to his making her laugh every day.

Bob had a 35-year career in advertising sales for the Winona Daily News and later worked for the Winona Post until his retirement. His first job was cleaning and stocking his dad’s bar in Utica Sunday mornings with his siblings when he was 10. Speaking of Bob’s childhood, his daughter’s favorite story about him was the fact that he went to a one-room schoolhouse (one of the last in Minnesota) and rode his pony Charlie to school every day.

Bob loved watching the History Channel, cheering for the Minnesota Vikings, and happy hour with his friends at the Mankato Bar.

An avid fisherman and outdoorsman, Bob loved spending time on the Mississippi River and its backwaters. He looked forward to fishing with his daughter Katie on the weekends most of all! Bob could never sit still (his retirement lasted a mere three months before he went back to work!) and he loved gardening, grilling, and working in the yard. A yearly highlight was always the fishing trip to Canada with his longtime best friend John Lange and the Lange family. He also loved pheasant hunting with his friends, Tony Lemieux and Bob Gotaas.

Bob’s greatest joy in life was his family, and he especially cherished the time he spent with his daughter, Katie – they were best friends, and she was the apple of his eye. He was deeply relieved when, after Katie turned 6, she began to share his love for fishing. He simply could not imagine raising a non-fishing child! She became his favorite first mate after a long line of first mates. His bond with his daughter was no surprise to anyone who knew Bob: kids flocked to him; his nickname could’ve been the Pied Piper.

He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Bob is lovingly survived by his wife, Peggy; daughter, Katie; brother: Irvin “Butch” (Ann) Shattuck; sisters: Mary Lou (Jeff) Massie and Susie (Larry) Montgomery; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Peggy; sister-in-law: Sue (Beranek) Severson; and mother-in-law: Anne Beranek-Einhorn.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM until the funeral service at 1 PM on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 E. Sarnia St., Winona. Deacon Justin Green will officiate. Following the service, a reception and celebration of Bob’s life will continue at the American Legion Club, 302 E. Sarnia St., Winona.

Bob will be laid to rest in a family ceremony at St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.
