RICHARD H. (RICK) DUELLMAN

Richard (Rick) H. Duellman, 74, of Winona, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at home in Winona.

Richard was born July 25, 1942, in Winona, to Henry and Rose (Michalski) Duellman. He attended Catholic and public schools in Winona, Winona Vo-Tech, and Winona State College. In 1964 he married Beverly Holan, and they had two children, Deborah and Catherine. Richard and Beverly were later divorced.

Richard attended the Minnesota State Patrol Academy at Arden Hills, graduating in 1966, and was appointed to the Minnesota State Patrol as a state trooper. He was stationed in the Owatonna, Rochester, and Winona areas until retiring in 1997.He was proud to serve over thirty years as a state trooper with the Minnesota State Patrol.

On December 17, 1982, Richard married Joy Buehler in Berne, MN. They have a son, Jonathan.

Richard enjoyed many sports and was a supporter of Cotter High School athletics. An avid Johnnies fan, he left with great memories of St. John’s University football games, his son’s alma mater.

Richard was a classic car owner for years maintaining a 1956 Chevy Bel Air, and he treated his various Harley Davidson motorcycles with equal care throughout the years. He enjoyed the open road and ventured on short trips across the Midwest.

Richard was a humble man that had immense pride for his children. He had a sense of humor that often produced a groan and a smile from his audience, except when with his own family, since they share this gift.

Richard was the ultimate protector. In our family, he was going to make sure everyone was prepared to travel safe.  His career demonstrated this more so. He looked to help those in need along the side of the road, which gave him much pride in his position. During his battle with lung cancer, he still stopped by to assist motorists on multiple occasions.  He will forever be missed and remembered as our protector-in-chief.

Richard is survived by his wife Joy, daughters Deborah L. (James) Drake of Arden Hills, MN, Catherine L. Duellman of Shoreview, MN, and Jonathan Duellman of (Apple Valley, MN) Three grandchildren, Michaela Duellman, and Alexander and Christian Drake; sisters Barbara Grossell, Joanne (David) Hemmelman, and brother David (Janice) of Winona, and nieces and nephews, and his wife Joy’s wonderful family, the Buehlers, who made the farm feel like home to all of us.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Anita Webber.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.  The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer and the Reverend Martin Schaefer will concelebrate, and the Minnesota State Patrol will provide an honor guard at the Basilica.

Richard will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery in a private family ceremony.

Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Friday, December 9, 2016, from 4 PM until 7 PM, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 PM.  Visitation will also be held at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka on Saturday, December 10, 2016, from 9 AM until 9:45 AM.
