He was born on July 21, 1919, in Winona, to Hubert and Edith (Osowski) Greenwood. Ray graduated from Winona High School, and went on to complete telegrapher training for the railroad at the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. Ray was united in marriage with Lorraine Cichosz on August 20, 1947, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.
Ray honorably served his country with the United States Army in the 370th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II, and participated in the landing on Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the campaigns in North Africa, Northern France, and Central Europe. He was awarded a Bronze Star in recognition of his service, and was discharged with the rank of Corporal. He often talked about his return home from Europe aboard the Queen Mary, and sailing into the harbor at New York City.
He was employed for many years with the Green Bay and Western Railroad as a telegrapher, retiring after 35 years of service. Ray was a member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, the Winona Athletic Club, and the American Legion.
Ray will be remembered for his love of dancing, going out to dinner, and traveling with Lorraine. He was very handy and took great pride in taking care of his home and his yard. Ray also enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 and Euchre, and he faithfully watched the Twins and the Vikings.
