OLIVE HITTNER

Olive Angst Hittner, 94, of Winona, passed away peacefully at Roger Metz Manor on Wednesday, December 6, 2017.

She was born to Clarence and Helen (Rothering) Angst on July 11, 1923, and grew up in Gilmore Valley along with her six brothers. She graduated from Winona Senior High School, and from Winona Business College where she studied bookkeeping. During the war, Olive courted her sweetheart, George Hittner, who was serving in the US Navy; they were married after the war and together raised four children in Winona.

Olive worked part-time as a bookkeeper before and after raising her children. In 1970, they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, but later returned to Winona where they both retired. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and enjoyed volunteering at the grade school.  Olive enjoyed cooking, baking, boating, bowling, and big band music, but she primarily loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Olive was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brothers: Willard, LaVern, Irvin, and Richard Angst.

She is survived by four children: Carol (Howard) Holz, Billing, MT; Joan (Mick) Owens, Cincinnati, OH; Mark (Mary) Hittner, New Bern, NC; and Susan (Michael) O’Brien, Winona, MN. Also surviving her are 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two brothers, John and Robert Angst, and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona.  Father James Berning will officiate.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM until 11:45 AM on Saturday in the Commons of St. Mary’s Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Catholic Relief Service, Winona Catholic Schools Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.
