MATTHEW JAMES PELLOWSKI

Matthew James Pellowski, age 60, of Winona, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, with his family at his childhood home.

Matt (Pootman, Fuzz, Nug) was born in Winona, to Mary Lou and Rodney Pellowski on August 5, 1956. He went to high school at Winona Senior High and graduated in 1974. He went on to earn a degree in Accounting from Winona Vo-Tech. At the age of 18, he started bartending at Poots Tavern, while attending college. After graduating at the age of 19, using money earned from his childhood paper route, he then purchased Poots Tavern and started the legacy of what came to be the “Poots Sports Palace”.

Staying in his childhood neighborhood, he brought to his community his love for all things sports. He was actively involved in his community. Providing sponsorship to all types of local sports teams. To include Softball, volleyball and Dart Leagues to just name a few. Matt will be remembered for his love of culinary world, in his creation of the local Taste of Winona favorite “The Pootza” which a created a cult like following and his ability to bring people together.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, Rodney; and two brothers: Anthony and Mark.

Matt is survived by his mother Mary Lou; and his siblings: Lynn (John) Schmidtknecht, Michael (Sharon Stutzka) Pellowski, and Kurt Pellowski; eleven nieces and nephews; and eleven great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Prayer Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home.  The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate.  Following the Prayer Service, visitation will continue at the funeral home until 3 PM.

Matt will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery in a family ceremony.
