Mary Ann Moham, age 86, of Winona, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2025 at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester, MN.
Mary Ann Moham (née Schreiber) was born July 24, 1938, to Harriet Smith (née Plinski) and John Schreiber, Sr. in Winona. She grew up in Winona and graduated from Cotter High School.
In 1978 Mary met her lifetime partner, Larry Loken. Together they shared many weekends dancing at the Hilltop Ballroom. When a good polka started to play they didn’t miss a beat. They shared a lifetime of laughter, mischief, and fun surrounded by family and friends.
Mary was a strong, independent person who didn’t take nonsense from anyone. She could be fierce, but loved her family dearly. You could always count on her.
Mary had an artistic side. Her eye was keen and her hand precise whether painting ceramics for the holiday shows she, her sister, Diana and her mom, Harriet held annually for years, making elaborate bows for gifts, arranging flowers for a display, or decorating one of the many cakes she made over the years for family and friends to help them celebrate joyous moments. We looked forward to our birthday cakes each year because they were made with love by Aunt Mary.
Mary loved flowers and had a beautiful garden full of them. At Christmas and Easter, she made sure the entire family would gather for a meal. She hosted many holidays at her home. At Easter, Mary would make personalized Easter egg cakes for family members.
Mary worked for Winona Agency in Winona for decades. She retired at the golden age of 75.
Mary loved the Minnesota Vikings. When the Vikings were playing you could hear her yelling at the TV and giving them “encouragement”.
She loved dogs and had two in her life, Tiny and Sexe. Both are in heaven with her now.
Mary developed dementia in her later years. She was lovingly cared for by her lifetime partner, Larry Loken and her niece, Tabitha Simon. We would like to thank the nurses and staff at St Mary’s Hospital in Rochester for their care and patience and the nurses and staff at Cottagewood Senior Communities and Mayo Hospice for the care they gave her during the last weeks of her life.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Harriet Smith, father, John Schreiber, Sr., step-father Eldrige (Smitty) Smith; brothers: Richard, Leonard (wife Pat), Paul (wife Ruthann), and John Schreiber (wife Sue) and her sisters: Diana Simon (husband Jack) and Irene Forster (husband George). She is survived by her lifelong partner Larry Loken, brothers Kenneth Schreiber (wife Betty) and Tim Smith (wife Lori) and sister Cheryl Lange (Robert), as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 East Sarnia St. in Winona. Visitation is at 12:30 pm with services at 1:30 pm. The Very Reverend Mark C. McNea will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery after the service. Lunch will be served after the burial at the funeral home.
