Mary Anne Zimmerman

Mary Anne Zimmerman, age 90, of Winona, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Benedictine – St. Anne in Winona.

She was born on April 11, 1933, in Mc Pherson County, SD, to Carl and Anna (Kallas) Mack.  Mary Anne was united in marriage with James E. Zimmerman on June 4, 1952, in Leola, SD, celebrating 70 years of marriage until his passing on October 26, 2022.

Mary Anne was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona and had a deep devotion to her Catholic faith.  She was instrumental in initiating the devotion of the Divine Mercy in the Winona parishes, and she and Jim had a dedicated prayer life, especially in saying the Rosary.

Mary Anne was an avid writer, having four of her books published.  She was also a weekly contributor to the Winona Post, writing the religious column, “Matter of Faith.”  

An excellent baker, she was especially known for her pies, earning her the name, “The Pie Lady.”  Mary Anne lovingly made over 1,000 pies, which also led to donating $10,000 for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka, and for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Mary Anne will be remembered as a dedicated homemaker, who was a loving wife, mom, and grandma, that will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Mary Anne is lovingly survived by her children: Kathy (Bob) Infield, Gene (Catherine) Zimmerman, Theresa (Dave) Sanow, Diane Turner, Don (Heather) Zimmerman, and Lynette (Dale Roland) Stevens; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren with another expected in May; a sister-in-law: Grace Zimmerman; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; children: Duane, Elaine, Melvin, and an infant son; and her siblings: LaVern, Arnold, Melvin, and Jim.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12:30 PM on Friday, February 23, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona, where visitation will be held in the church Commons from 11 AM until the time of the Mass.  The Reverend Russell Scepaniak will officiate.   Mary Anne will be laid to rest at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Wilson.  

Pallbearers will be: Don Zimmerman, Conner Zimmerman, Eli Zimmerman, Kristopher Zimmerman, Mike Turner and Matt Turner.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona.

Mary Anne’s family would like to express their deepest heartfelt gratitude to Benedictine – St. Anne, especially nurses Kelley and Theresa, for the excellent and loving care that she received.
