Karen Marie Block, age 65, of Winona, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Sunday morning, August 1, 2021, at the Home and Community Options House in Gilmore Valley.
She was born in Winona on January 4, 1956, to her parents, Clarence Albert and Elaine Louise (Wamhoff) Block. At an early age, Karen was diagnosed with Cornelia DeLange Syndrome, a genetic disorder, which made for a life of dependency on others for her care and well-being. Later in life, Karen had the opportunity to move into a house with Home and Community Options. With the care and training Karen received from the HCO staff, she thrived and was content, and residing there allowed her to live her life in a home environment.
Karen attended groups and worked at the Developmental Achievement Center. Arriving daily at the DAC, she took it upon herself to stand at the entrance greeting others on their arrival. Karen participated in the various programs of Project Compass, and of People of Faith which was hosted by Redeemer Lutheran Church in Winona.
Karen enjoyed coffee dates at Caribou Coffee, and she never turned down the opportunity to go shopping. She appreciated the visits of her sister-in-law, Joyce Block, and her great-nephew, William.
She was a member of St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winona.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, William; and a niece, Megan Shaw. She is survived by her sister-in-law: Joyce Block; nephew, Beau Block; and a great-nephew, William Shaw.
A graveside service will be celebrated at 1:30 PM on Friday, August 6, 2021, at the Frank Hill Cemetery in Wilson, MN. Karen’s guardian, the Reverend William Flesch, will be the officiant.
