June M. (Madland) Simon, 90, died September 29, 2021, at St. Anne’s Nursing Home in Winona. June was born in St. Paul, Minn., on June 23, 1931, the daughter of Dr. Robert Madland and Marie (Nielsen) Madland.
June graduated from Harding High School in St. Paul, in 1949. She received a B.A. and B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1955. She met her husband, Gerry R. Simon, when he was modeling in her college art class. June and Gerry had two daughters, Heather Fischer and Erica Stark; and one son, Sol Simon. They divorced in 1966.
June lived the rest of her life as an independent, single mother, residing primarily in St. Paul. She taught art in the St. Paul school system for many years. She moved to Winona five years ago to be close to her son Sol. June loved astrology and having long, in-depth conversations with her family and friends. She said that she hoped to become a Jungian psychologist in another life. She is survived by her three children; grandchildren, Billy Kroona, Elena Stark, Katherine Stark, Moses Simon and Aaron Janicke; and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 16, at the Winona Arts Center, 228 East Fifth Street in Winona. Internment will follow at the Oak Grove cemetery in Rushford, Minn., where is she will be buried next to her great-grandparents.
