James L. Lorenz

James L. Lorenz, age 70, of Winona, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at his home.

He was born on December 11, 1952, in Winona, to Herman and Mildred (Rotering) Lorenz.  Jim was a graduate of Alma High School, and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in History at Winona State University.

Jim was united in marriage with Ellen Weis on September 24, 1977, in Winona.  He honorably and proudly served his country as a Master Sergeant with the United States Army, serving several tours including being stationed in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, and Haiti.

He was employed for over 20 years as a case manager for the Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Clinic in Winona.

Jim will be remembered for his love of military history, reading, and spending time with his family.  He will be deeply missed by all those who loved him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Ellen; sons: Jesse Lorenz and Ian (Michelle) Lorenz; grandchildren: Alexander, Ethne, and Kael; brother: Gregory Lorenz; in-laws: Mary (Marv) Smith, Thomas (Mary) Weis, and Jane (William Nelson) Weis; nieces and nephews: Travis, Thomas, William, Kieran, Alexander, Emma, Cora, John, and Kate; as well as other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a niece, Moira.

Visitation will be held from 2 PM until a time of sharing at 3 PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 E. Sarnia St., Winona.  A luncheon and celebration of Jim’s life will follow at the Winona VFW Club, 208 E. Third St.

Jim will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN, with military honors.
