JAMES J. "JACK" DUELLMAN
First Sergeant, James (Jack) Joseph Duellman, age 81, of Winona, MN, died on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Lake Winona Manor.
Jack was born on October 11, 1934, in Winona, MN to Alphonse and Evelyn (Drazkowski) Duellman. On May 17, 1958, he was united in marriage with Evelyn Theresa Ashelin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona.
He was a member of St. Casimir’s Catholic Church. Jack was skilled in many different trades; however, he worked as an Independent Contractor for Dart Transit until his retirement.
Jack’s love for our country saw him enlist in the United States Army and then join the US Army National Guard rising to the rank of an E-8/First Sergeant.
For 30 years, Jack and his wife, Evelyn, owned and operated the West End Hotel. Jack was a dedicated father and worked very hard to instill in his children a strong work ethic and a never quit attitude.
Jack was an avid sports fan that prayed for a Vikings Super Bowl win. He loved playing cards and communicating with anyone.
Jack is survived by his children, Denise (Leonard) LaCara, Thomas Duellman, Lawrence (partner, Janice Baertsch) Duellman, Jay Duellman, and Merridith (Glenn) Joly; grandchildren, Peter, Andrew, Laura, Hannah, Kate, Seth, Ellianna, and Gilbert; three great-grandchildren; sisters Janice (Benjamin) Maroushek, Marie Schueler; brothers Jim (Joni) Kozlowski, Kenneth (Connie) Duellman, William (Lois) Kozlowski, Joseph Kozlowski; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Ashelin, Polly Ashelin, and Gloria Ashelin; brother-in-law: Tom Ashelin; special friend, Barbara Thomas and good buddies George Fockens and Richard Cannon; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; son, Lonnie Duellman; and brother, Robert Duellman.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home. Deacon James Welch will officiate.
Jack will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery where the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors.
Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 7 PM on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at the Watkowski-Mulyk Funeral Home, where the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held at 6:45 PM. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, from 10 AM until the time of the service.
Pallbearers will be: Seth Duellman, Mike Duellman, George Fockens, Bill Schniepp, Ralph Drazkowski, Dr. Thomas Retzinger, Rick Pelowski and John Rybarczyk.
Jack’s family wishes to extend gratitude to the entire staff of the Lake Winona Manor for the fantastic care that he received over the last seven weeks.
