HAZEL I. (LUBINSKI) CASEY

Hazel I. (Lubinski) Casey, age 94, of Winona, passed away peacefully September 4, 2016, in her home at Sugar Loaf Senior Living with family at her side.

Hazel was born September 7, 1921, in Renville, MN, to Sophia (Nelson) and Cornelius Westby. She was the second youngest of eleven children, having three brothers and seven sisters.

She married Frank Lubinski on May 3, 1941, and they were together until his death on December 28, 1986. On March 4, 1989, she married James Casey.

Hazel came to Winona at age 18 and began working as a nanny and housekeeper. She was also a waitress at the Hot Fish Shop, a factory worker at Lake Center Switch and a homemaker.  She retired from Lake Center in 1983 after 29 years of service.

Hazel was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed many additional hobbies such as hand needlework, cooking, dancing, baking, reading and playing cards.  She loved to go fishing and was quite the fisher woman. She enjoyed fishing from the Lake Winona Fishing Piers and always enjoyed river cruises on the Mississippi. Hazel enjoyed music of any kind but was very fond of songs played on the accordion. She loved dogs, especially her beloved Pomeranian, “Dolly.”

She was a long time parishioner of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. Hazel was also a member of the Shriners, and of Westfield Golf Club, where she enjoyed playing cards. She still held a current membership to the Winona Elks Lodge.

Hazel is survived by her son, Dennis (Paulette Yeske) Lubinski, Winona; her daughter, Barbara (Roger) Hannon, Parker, CO; her three grandchildren: Kimberly (LeRoy) Casali; Kristine (Peter) Mauseth; and Kevin (Marcia) Lubinski; her eleven great-grandchildren:  Bethany and Cody Casali; Nikola Hannon; Hayden Mauseth;  Natalie, Renae, Seth, Isaac, Genevieve, Christian, and Francis Lubinski;  sister-in-law  and brother-in-law: Phyllis (Lubinski) and Dick Carney; sixteen nieces and nephews; four step-daughters; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Frank and James; all of her siblings; and her grandson Dr. Keith Hannon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, which would have been Hazel’s 95th birthday, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.  The Reverend William Kulas will officiate.

Hazel will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, from 10:30 AM until 11:15 AM.

In Lieu of Flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Hazel to the Winona Elks Lodge, BPOE 327 Elks Youth Camp.  Hazel’s family would like to thank the many caregivers at Sugar Loaf Senior Living and Winona Health Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
