  • After going through Utica, go left or north on County Road 33 towards Altura for approximately 2 miles
  • Go right or east on County Road 24 towards Bethany – County Road 24 will meet County Road 20 just south of Bethany
  • Go left or north on County Road 20 towards Bethany, and continue through Bethany approximately 1 mile
  • Go right or east onto County Road 27 for approximately 1 mile – church will be on the left or north side of County Road 27

FROM THE TWIN CITIES

  • Go south on Highway 61 towards Winona
  • At Minnesota City, go right or west on Minnesota Highway 248 towards Rollingstone
  • Continue through Rollingstone – approximately one mile outside of Rollingstone, go left or south onto County Road 27
  • Follow County Road 27 for approximately 5-6 miles – church will be on the right or north side of County Road 27

Gerhardt Frederich Edward Matthees, known to all as Gary, age 89, of Bloomington, MN, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington.

He was born on March 26, 1928, at home in Norton Township, Winona County, to Rudolph and Emma (Tews) Matthees.  He was united in marriage with Dauphney M. Anderson on September 27, 1952, in South Saint Paul, and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2016.

He was a man of faith. He was a man of the soil. He was a man of hard work. He was a man of humor, kindness, and optimism. He enjoyed the outdoors and walked, camped, boated, fished, and hunted. He was clever and resourceful in his work and in his garage. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Heartfelt thanks goes out to his many caregivers and friends at Masonic Homes.

Gary is survived by children: Ed, Ron, Tim (Karen); Grandchildren: Justinne Matthees, Joshua (Sammy) Matthees, Laura (Will) Coleman, Heather Dose; Great Grandchildren: Tanner Matthees, Maja, Emma, Piper, and Audrey Coleman. Sisters, Brothers and their spouses: Ada (Les) Iverson, Gene Edleman, Elizabeth Berndt, Mildred (Donald) Nisbit, Donald (Ellie) Matthees, Marvin (Pam) Matthees. Brothers and Sisters-in-law and their spouses: Reuben and Joan Anderson, Nancy and Don Gensmer, Judy and Ger Krumrie. He is also survived by thirty plus nieces, nephews and their spouses and children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dauphney; brother, John; sisters: Henrietta Edleman and Mary Ann Tointon; and brothers-in- law: Ronald Rausch, Frank Tointon, and Robert Berndt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Norton, rural Lewiston, MN.  Pastor David Eckert will officiate.

Gary will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Monday, June 12, 2017, from 4 PM until 7 PM, and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.

A memorial service will be held at the Minnesota Masonic Home Chapel in Bloomington at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, June 14, 2017.
