Florene Wessin

December 28, 1936 — March 26, 2020

Florene Wessin

Florene Mae Wessin was born December 28, 1936, in Winona, Minnesota and died March 26, 2020, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, surrounded by her three loving children. She was 83 years old.

Florene moved at a young age with her family from Winona to Eyota, Minnesota. After graduating from high school, she worked for Mayo Clinic and later met her husband, Robert Wessin. They lived in Winona and soon started a family there. Florene stayed at home and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, shopping and searching for that great bargain. She later started working in the lunch line at Winona Junior High School and then Madison Elementary School. Our family loved camping and we enjoyed spending most weekends with family and friends. Mom's pride was her children, her grandchildren, and recently her great grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and caring grandmother.

Florene was a member of St. Casmir’s Catholic church for many years.  She will be remembered for her love of music and most recently getting out of her wheelchair to dance to one of her favorite songs, “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond.  May you dance with dad and the angels in heaven now mom.

During the time her children were with her at Liberty House before her passing, they heard many stories of what a kindhearted, loving, compassionate and humble person she was from both the staff and the residents and how much she was loved there.

Florene is preceded in death by her parents, Bertram and Florence (Jennison) Hjelle;  husband, Robert "Bump" Wessin; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Clara and Arthur Wessin and many other family and friends.

Florene is survived by her brother: Robert Hjelle, and his wife Elaine Martin; son: David Wessin (Stivenson Contreras); daughters: Beth (Jeff) Puddy and Joann (John) Hickman; grandchildren: Andrew (Paula) Wessin, Sarah Puddy, Ryan (Lauren) Wessin, Jason (Sarah) Puddy, Tyler, Zach and Katie Hickman; and great grandchildren: Elijah, Addisyn, Colton, Iian, Haley, Jack and Evelyn.

Due to the current health concerns, there will be a private service held for her family at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home.  Florene will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Andrew Wessin, Ryan Wessin, Jason Puddy, Sarah Puddy, Tyler Hickman, Zachary Hickman and Katie Hickman.

Our family would like to extend our special thanks and sincere appreciation to the entire staff at Liberty House in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for their loving care of mom. In lieu of flowers, our family asks that donations be sent to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
