Douglas J. Reinhard, age 81, of Winona, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Sauer Health Care.
He was born on August 7, 1942, in Winona, to John and Marjorie (Fox) Reinhard. He grew up in Winona and moved to California for a few years while his dad was serving in the military.
Doug’s family returned to Winona, and he attended St. Martin’s Lutheran School, and graduated from Winona Senior High School. He completed his bachelor’s degree in teaching from Winona State University, and he later completed his master’s degree, also at Winona State.
He was a member of St. Martin’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Winona, where he was active in singing with the choir, and enjoyed attending various church functions and activities.
Doug met his wife, Peggy Manning, while they were both teaching for LeRoy-Ostrander Schools in Minnesota, and they eloped and were married on June 21, 1968, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Peggy preceded him in death on December 10, 2023.
Doug and Peggy later relocated to Winona, and he continued teaching at St. Martin’s Lutheran School, as well as in a substitute capacity for schools in the area. Doug and Peggy also owned and operated the Primo Record Store in Winona for several years. Doug would later serve as a bus driver, and he recently commented that this was one of his favorite jobs.
In his earlier years, Doug enjoyed fishing with his dad and playing softball for various teams. He will be remembered for his love of watching sports, bowling, music, singing, and his many students over the years. In retirement, Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, doing Elvis impersonation in the community, and he was a huge fan of the Vikings, Twins, and Timberwolves.
Doug is lovingly survived by his daughter, Christy Malenke; granddaughter, Ella Malenke; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, and his parents, John and Marjorie.
Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 E. Sarnia St., Winona. The Reverend Richard A. Moore will officiate. Doug will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to St. Martin’s Ev. Lutheran Church or School in Winona.
