Craig Groth

Craig J. Groth, 78, of Winona, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022, peacefully in his home.

He was born on May 25, 1944, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Elmer and Lee Groth. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Lee Groth (married 1972).

Upon graduation from Patrick Henry High School, Craig joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1962 to 1966. Upon completing his service Craig went to work for Northwestern Bell in Minneapolis. In 1971, Craig moved to Chicago to work for ParaGear as a master parachute rigger. Craig later joined the Chicago Police Department and reached the rank of Detective.  In 1998, after retiring from the Chicago Police Department, Craig and Karen relocated to Winona, MN, where they operated the Winona Park Bed and Breakfast.

Throughout his life, Craig had a love for aviation and obtained his pilot’s license during his time at ParaGear. Craig rebuilt two Austin-Healey roadsters, enjoyed travel, and was a dog lover.

Craig is also survived by his sister, Karen Fitch, as well as 9 nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and nephews, many in-laws, and a number of young people whom he loved, mentored, and helped throughout his life.

A private memorial service for Craig’s survivors will be held in Winona, MN, at a later date.

Those who wish to remember Craig in a special way may make gifts in his memory to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 265 Lafayette St., Winona, MN 55987 or the American Lung Association at www.action.lung.org or a charity of their choice.
