Cornelius Sobotta

CORNELIUS E. SOBOTTA

Cornelius E. Sobotta, age 85, of Winona, left his physical body at Lake Winona Manor on Friday, September 2, 2016, to enter into the spiritual dimension of the Almighty.    He lived a quiet life; however, his courteous and pleasing smile, as well as his quick and witty sense of humor, will be missed by his many acquaintances and friends.

He was born on November 3, 1930, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the son of George and Gertrude (Kulig) Sobotta.  He was raised in North Creek, near Arcadia, WI, with his three sisters and two brothers, all who have preceded him in death: Al Sobotta, Raymond Sobotta, Adeline Sobotta Hogenson, Proxy Sobotta, and Ruth Sobotta Gandyra.

Cornelius honorably served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.  Following his military service, he relocated to Winona, where he worked for the Peerless Chain Company for over 36 years.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.

Cornelius is lovingly survived by his nieces and nephews: Shirley (Dr. Luis) Gandyra Duco; Joyce Gandyra George; Patricia (Leo) Gandyra Lembitz; Michele (Andrew) Gandyra Haines; Paulette Sobotta Yeske; Brian Sobotta; Lenora (Pete) Hogenson Boynton; Ruth (Joe) Hogenson Peplinski; Ursula Hogenson; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; niece: Carol Sobotta Piechowski; and nephew, Robert Hogenson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12:30 PM on Friday, September 9, 2016, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.

Cornelius will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery where the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors.

Visitation will be held at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka on Friday, September 9, 2016, from 11:30 AM until 12:15 PM.

Memorials may be directed to the Winona American Legion Club, 302 East Sarnia Street, Winona, MN  55987.
