Bernadine A. (Herrick) Buege, age 89, of Winona, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2020, at Roger Metz Manor.
She was born on September 20, 1930, in Winona. As an infant, she moved with her parents, Stanley and Helen Herrick, and her older brother, Arthur, to 520 Hamilton Street. She would live there until her marriage to Wayne B. Buege on October 11, 1952.
As an Army wife, she and Wayne lived in Texas, Japan, Missouri, Germany, Louisiana, and Hawaii, before returning to Winona. She would proudly tell all people that each of her children was born on a different continent.
While growing up, Bernadine worked in kitchens of boarding houses as well as in restaurants. After her youngest child was in school, she worked at Winona Industries for several years, and then at Lake Center Switch until she retired in 1995.
Following Wayne’s death in 1991, she traveled throughout the United States – her children loved being able to show their mother their parts of the country.
Before the onset of Alzheimer’s, Bernadine enjoyed crossword puzzles, word find games, and sudoku. She also spent many hours on her computer playing games.
She was a skilled crocheter who created doilies, christening gowns, and afghans. She crocheted outfits for an organization dedicated to helping parents of children born prematurely.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; parents, Stanley and Helen; brothers: Arthur and Gerald, and her sister, Dorothy. She is survived by her children: Denise (Robin Bergstrom) Buege; LeeAnn (Ron) Whetstone; and George (Kim) Buege; granddaughters: Kaylene (Brandon) Ready; Jenni Whetstone, and Shannon Buege; step-grandson: Anthony Cotton; great-grandchildren: Emerson and Callan Ready; brother; Marcel Herrick; and her best friend and sister, Mary Orlikowski and brother-in-law, Roger Orlikowski. Bernadine and Mary shared many adventures. Thanks to Mary, Bernadine was able to live in Winona as her children lived in Minneapolis; Rosenberg, Texas; and Morgantown, West Virginia.
Bernadine’s family wishes to thank everyone at Watkins Manor and Roger Metz Manor for their care and love.
The family respectfully asks that memorials be directed to Winona Health Hospice.
