Allyn "Gramps" Ellinghuysen
Allyn Duane Ellinghuysen, 71, of rural Winona, MN, passed away on December 4, 2024, in a fatal car accident outside of Lewiston.
Allyn was born to Marvin and Gladys (Prigge) Ellinghuysen on June 13, 1953, in Plainview, MN.
He attended the French School in Plainview until age 10; after moving to Lewiston, he attended the country school and graduated from Lewiston-Altura High School in 1971. He attended SouthEast Technical College.
On August 25, 1979, he was united in marriage to Kathryn “Kathy” Meier in Winona. They had 4 children together in their 16 years of marriage, until her passing in 1995 due to cancer.
Allyn worked alongside his father Marvin farming. They sold the dairy cows in 2007 and increased their numbers in beef cows. He also could be found custom square baling or hauling cattle. Most recently he worked for Ag Partners in Lewiston.
Allyn enjoyed going on hunting trips, riding motorcycle, attending bull sales, and having his Rocky Mountain Oyster Feeds. He became well known with his mare Shenandoah in speed events; along with raising quarter horses with Kathy. He could be found trail riding with friends or in parades. He had a collection of western books he loved to read. It seemed he always had a litter of blue heeler pups.
Allyn is survived by 4 children: Wendy (Johannes) Badenhorst of Lanesboro, MN; Emily (Pete) McIntire of St. Charles, MN; Jesse (Amy Doughty) Ellinghuysen of Spring Valley, WI; and Lisa (Brandon) Rakstad of Winona; 6 grandchildren: Lilly, Paisley, Daniel, Kathryn, Sawyer, and Bristol. He enjoyed being around his grandkids. Allyn is also survived by his sister, Mary Feller of Watertown, South Dakota, Jeanne (Jeff) Kramer, Paul Meier, Pat (Jayne) Meier, Mike Meier, Dan Block, Bill (Melissa) Meier, Ann (Dennis) Bares, and nieces and nephews.
Allyn was preceded in death by his wife Kathy; his parents, Marvin and Gladys; mother-in-law, Rita Meier; father-in-law, Charles Meier; and a sister-in-law, Terri Block.
