AGNES M. WOOD
Agnes M. Wood, age 93, of Winona, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016, at Sauer Healthcare in Winona.
She was born on March 21, 1923, in Independence, WI, to Paul and Mary (Marsolek) Kokott. Following graduation from Cathedral High School in 1941, Agnes honorably served her country with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. She then went on to complete her accounting degree with the Vo-Tech School in Winona.
In 1952, Agnes was united in marriage with Melvin W. Wood in Winona, and he preceded her in death on November 11, 1976.
She was employed with Watkins, Knitcraft, and she served as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Xcel Energy, from where she retired in 1989.
Agnes was a member of St. John Nepomucene Church in Winona, and she will be remembered for her love of doing crossword puzzles, baking cookies, crocheting, and for how she always put others first and enjoyed taking care of others.
Agnes is survived by her children: Mary Jo (Jim) Fitzgerald, Winona; Kay (Bruce) Norton, Rushford, MN; and Chris Wood, Winona; grandchildren: Eric (Danae) Norton; Adam (Molly) Norton; and Mandy (Hunter) Merchlewitz; great-grandchildren: Tyse Norton, Jase Norton, Frank Merchlewitz, and Allie Merchlewitz; brother: Andy Kokott; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughters: Debra Kay Wood in 1954; and Beth Karen Wood in 2009; and her brothers and sisters: Frank Kokett; Julie Karis; Mary Beck; Helen Anderson; Rose Voelker; Clara Heinske; and Margaret Bohlinger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at St. John Nepomucene Church, 560 East Broadway, Winona.
The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate.
Agnes will be laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery, Trempealeau, WI.
Visitation will be held at St. John Nepomucene Church on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, from 4 PM until the time of the Mass.
Following the Mass, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors outside of the church.
